After that song came to an end, the electricity in the air seemed to explode as the band ripped into the breakaway hit from the Attention Attention release, “Devil.” After this great performance Godsmack had their work cut out for them.Īfter a short set changeover, the crowd was ready for Godsmack to grace the stage and deliver a rousing set of killer hits form their extensive catalog and that they did – with songs to highlight their latest release and their backlog of killer rock tracks. More hits followed, but the crowd came unglued when the singer and guitarist made their way through the crowd after “Second Chance” – which got the entire crowd to its feet – and played a killer version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” from a makeshift stage set up at the back of the arena and the duo serenaded the crowd. The band finally broke into new material from their latest disc when they broke into “Get Up.” The rhythm section of Barry Kerch and bassist Eric Bass anchored the entire set, but with excitement and fun, as Bass jumped all over the place and Kerch’s dreads flew too and fro as he took control of the shows tempo from behind his drum kit. Next up was “Cut the Cord” and an amazing rendition of “Bully” which was sandwiched with “I’ll Follow You.” Frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers played off each other song after song, getting the crowd amped up with each interaction, smile, and overall stage movement. The foursome hit the stage and came out ready to rock with all of their friends on a Friday night. As with the earlier show on the tour, Shinedown took to the stage first and came straight at the crowd with an amazing one-two punch of “Sound of Madness” and “Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom)” with the fun and bombast of the originals. Review and Photographs by: Todd “Toddstar” Jolicoeur ( Having caught this tour earlier in the year on the opening date in Detroit, I was excited to catch the excitement of this show once again at an indoor venue when Godsmack and Shinedown rolled through Toledo, OH bringing their hit packed show to The Huntington Center.

This is because its middle is dark-the light can’t pass there. Mirror telephoto lenses, such as the Samyang 500mm f/8 will display a distinctive, donut-shaped bokeh. Many photographers call that “soap-bubble bokeh.” The Mayer Optik Görlitz 100mm f/2.8 renders out-of-focus highlights in a very special way, with distinctive edges. This is a signature look of many vintage portrait lenses, like the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2. Optical vignetting at the extreme can cause the out-of-focus parts of an image to be warped into a swirly form. Towards the edges of the frame, bokeh balls will be distorted from their original circular shape. It depends quite a bit on the optical structure.Īt wide aperture values, many lenses will present a phenomenon called the cat’s eye bokeh thanks to optical vignetting. Huge differences can be found among lenses just because of their different designs. (Despite that, it’s probably our favorite prime lens for the price.) Lens Design It only has five blades, which are not even rounded! As a result, it produces a signature type of pentagonal bokeh balls when stopped down. Here’s what this bladed aperture looks like inside a lens.Ī quite infamous lens from this standpoint is the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, the nifty-fifty. The Nikon 105mm f/1.4E ED has nine, and so does the Sigma 35mm f/1.4. There are lenses out there with more aperture blades. Typically, high-end lenses have 7-8 blades, especially portrait-oriented ones. Lenses that have plenty of blades will keep the iris looking roughly circular even when closed down. But once you start to increase your f-stop just a little bit, differences in iris design become apparent. This means the shape of your bokeh will be circular, too. The shape of the aperture is a perfect circle when it’s wide open. The aesthetic qualities are just as important. What Affects the Quality of Bokeh? Until now, I only mentioned things that affect the amount of our bokeh. So in these conditions, the crop sensor setup will show less bokeh. The further you stand, the less bokeh you’ll have. Now, we know that subject distance does indeed affect bokeh. The crop camera will force you to move away from your subject to keep the same framing. Let’s say you use the exact same lens on a full frame and a 1.5x camera. Physically, sensor size doesn’t have anything to do with the amount of blur. The more you open up your aperture (decrease your f-stop), the stronger the background blur becomes, and the more bokeh appears. This is quite straightforward for anyone who’s learned DSLR photography basics. So, you’ll get more background blur from an 85mm f/2 lens than from a 50mm f/2 lens. This is because perspective compression forces the blur to spread out more. The longer your focal length is, the more bokeh will show up. Subject distance affects the relative size and amount of lens blur in your frame. But if your subject is too close to the background, there won’t be enough separation to let large bokeh balls. The closer your focus is to the camera, the shallower the depth of field becomes. The distance between the subject and the background is important, as well. The most important factor is the distance between the subject and the camera. The quantity and quality of bokeh depend on many things. Not every camera and lens behaves the same when it comes to out-of-focus areas. The size of bokeh balls is actually possible to precisely calculate. You can’t really measure or calculate its qualities. It’s a visual element and aesthetic factor. It’s a number, a measurement.īokeh, in turn, is the result of a shallow depth of field. Depth of field refers to the range in space that’s in acceptable focus. Well, the two are closely related to each other, but they’re not the same. You may be asking, “What’s the difference between bokeh and depth of field?” This means that in the sensor’s plane, the projected image is not sharp, but out of focus.Īs all the individual out-of-focus points add up and blend together, you get bokeh. On the latter two figures, the plane of focus for our subject is before or behind the sensor. In the first figure, the rays coming from the subject converge on the sensor, projecting a sharp image of the subject’s plane. Let’s take a look at this graphic to see how that works. You have to prioritize a plane as your area of focus. Your lens is not capable of that in practical circumstances. We know well that you can’t have everything in focus at the same time. To control and shape bokeh to your needs, you first need to understand how it works and what affects it. And how photography converts three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional mold. To understand bokeh photography, you need to understand depth of field. It doesn’t distract from the in-focus subject. Bokeh relates to the quality of the lack of focus. It usually refers to an out-of-focus background. Bokeh is a term used to describe the out-of-focus portions of a photograph. Billboards Target Vacationers on Florida’s Panhandle Danes’ impression of Grandin is impeccable. When she finally began to talk, it was in a shouty, discordant, no-nonsense monotone. As a little girl, she was violent, self-harming, friendless and mute. Like Raymond in Rain Man, Grandin sees life in pictures that she then memorises. Why do they nearly always depict characters or choose real people who speak in that monotone and have all the tics? This is how autism was described in 1953 by the DSM, and it was said to be the result of cold parenting. Now 74, Grandin was labelled as an infantile schizophrenic. The most obvious example of this is Temple Grandin, the 2010 TV biopic starring Clare Danes as the eponymous heroine an outrageously gifted woman who has led a fascinating life. It is imaginatively and knowledgeably curated, but still inevitably reflects the shortcomings of autism in the movies.Īs with Rain Man, exceptionalism is at the heart of so many films about autism. The season is short and sweet, consisting of a cult classic ( Mulholland Drive), mainstream hit ( Temple Grandin) a romcom with a largely autistic cast, obscure indie films, shorts and documentaries. The season is accompanied by talks in a series of relaxed screenings. This month, the Barbican in London is presenting Autism and Cinema: An Exploration of Neurodiversity. Something not always recognised in the movies – the all-tic-ing, eye-contact-avoiding, robotic-sounding weirdo genius is still the autist of choice for Hollywood. Most importantly – and obviously – all autistic people are different. Autistic people find communication and social interaction difficult, display repetitive and restrictive behaviour, and may be over or under sensitive to light, sound or touch, have highly focused interests, and experience extreme anxiety and meltdowns. By 2013, Asperger’s Disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders had been replaced with the umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (basically a posh name for autism). However, depending on what you do specifically, a VO2 max on a bike or treadmill may not be the best test if you do another sport like swimming or MMA. So why worry about VO2 max? Well, it is a great measure of cardiovascular health on any level of fitness. A person who can do 10 pull-ups, though, may see the same increase in performance (4-5 reps), but it is only a 40%-50% increase in performance. It is very similar to the gains seen with people who do pull-ups regularly and those who do not.Ī person who just did his first pull-up ever will see huge gains in the next month of training - likely a 400%-500% increase in pull-ups. However, if you are untrained and have never reached your full athletic potential, walking, resistance training and interval training will help increase your VO2 max. The more in shape you are, the less percentage your VO2 max will improve. This study investigates how to increase VO2 max efficiently.Īs with many elements of fitness, VO2 max is all relative. But the common denominator is that you have to push yourself to near maximal levels of exertion to increase your VO2 max effectively. However, there are studies that show that even basic resistance training programs (circuits) and more advanced kettlebell workouts can improve VO2 max. There are also some ballpark calculators online that cover running and rowing, such as this rowing machine calculator.įor the average person, increasing your VO2 max by 15%-20% is very possible by starting some form of cardio. There are tests to gauge an individual's VO2 max that are taken in exercise science labs where you run or bike as fast as you can and have your oxygen measured. So when people see better running times for instance, most of us say, "I got into better running shape over the past 12 weeks." A physiologist would say, "You increased your VO2 max by X%." As summer nears and more people start running again after a few months of alternate workouts, you may feel like you are out of running shape. "In the last three years, this has been the best opportunity that I had to work on my business project", noted Ellis. Three years ago, Ellis won a baking competition in Beijing but he has been struggling ever since to find a partner to start his business. In the next six months, The Hatchery expects to launch six different food and beverage businesses, including four restaurant concepts and two food products like a range of high-end bottled cocktails.īaker Jonathan Ellis, a native of Chicago, has been the first food entrepreneur to use the platform to realize his dream of opening Beijing's first American style bakery. "We are building partnerships with different established food operators in Beijing such as the Bookworm and the coffee chain Café Flat White, so that food entrepreneurs can extend the incubation process after gate five in those facilities," pointed out Johnson. The last step of the process consists of replicating the business outside the platform. The Hatchery calculates that most businesses would only need 50,000 yuan and five months to pass through the first three gates. Through gates two to four, food entrepreneurs validate demand for their concepts and perfect their business operating model. In the initial stage, entrepreneurs bring an innovative food concept and a business plan to develop it. In order to identify which business ideas can gain a place in Beijing's food scene, The Hatchery has established a five-gate process. Since its launch, 10 different entrepreneurs have shown interest in using the platform but only two have actually used it so far. "We are similar to a venture capital firm, because a lot of the restaurants that we will help develop will become independent and we will retain a share in them," explained co-founder Johnson. The Hatchery either charges low fees for the use of its facilities or offers its services, including financing, in exchange of founder's equity in the business, with food entrepreneurs still retaining control of the concept. Last year, the value of China's food and beverage industry reached 7.0 billion yuan ($1.08 billion).ĭespite the attractive growth potential of the industry, the high costs of starting a food business, including the expensive rental fees of commercial spaces and the difficulties of obtaining licenses, have prevented foreigners from being more active in this growing market.įor this reason, the culinary incubator located in Beijing's central district of Sanlitun provides business counseling and access to a shared kitchen facility to food startups until they can stand on their own. In February long-term expats inaugurated The Hatchery, Beijing's first foreign-run culinary incubator, to allow food entrepreneurs to test and validate their dining concepts in the Chinese market without assuming prohibitive costs.Ĭhina's food and beverage industry is expected to keep a steady growth in the next years, due to increasing per capita disposable income.įrom 2015 to 2020, China's food and beverage industry is expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate of around 8.8 percent, according to Neil Wang, partner and China president of the consulting firm Frost & Sullivan.
